Restocking The Shop

Slowly, but surely, I have been adding items back to my Etsy shop again. I took everything out of the shop starting in January this year. In the mean time, I am/was selling my vintage on Instagram.

My Instagram prices are lower than Etsy to stay competitive, but it looks like Instagram sales have slowed down for everyone. So it’s back to Etsy, where new inventory can be found weekly. I will be transferring inventory from Instagram to Etsy if it hasn’t sold in a while. But also keep an eye out for newly rescued vintage items being listed!

Right now, the FREE SHIPPING promo has been extended from June through July 14th on Etsy. Here’s a sneak peek of my Etsy shop. Maybe you’ll find something for yourself or a gift for someone who is a vintage enthusiast too. Take advantage of the free shipping, today!

Who’s That Lady?

After just scheduling some strategic tweets about my current giveaway, I realized I need to schedule some blog posts too. Can’t be blogging a couple of times a week, when I have time… BORING! But, while I have you and your attention, I think I am going to introduce myself, aka blogger/seller/human.

See that profile pic off to the side? Yep, that’s me, Melanie. You know I love design/art/decorating/animals/vintage, just as it says. To be more precise, I will go into detail:

ART. Art has been a big part of my life. I took it throughout middle school and was in AP Art in high school. Continuing on into college, I graduated with my BFA in Art from the University of Texas at Arlington. I enjoy painting and collage as creative outlets, but really can’t seem to get invested in doing them anymore. I took a painting class at the AMOA Laguna Gloria last Spring and fell right back in love. It’s still there… when I find inspiration and time.

DESIGN. My last year in college though, I decided to focus on graphic design. I dabble in a little bit of it now with my job creating the company weekly sales newsletters, but I’m no logo/branding creating genius. I just admire all of that from afar like packaging/illustration/typography.

DECORATING. Geez, obsessed much? Just look at my Pinterest board. My style in a nutshell: Modern Eclectic (modern mixed with antiques/vintage). Decorating has been in my blood since I was a kid though. My room was always pristine and decorated. I collected Barbie’s, but I also asked for and bought decor & furniture for my room. Embarrassingly enough, in high school, I even had a sign on my bed to not sit on it. Everything was in it’s perfectly staged place. Who I was trying to impress, I don’t know, but it sure makes me laugh today. Creating your happy place is serious business, folks!

ANIMALS. Where do I begin? This is my weakness; they are my heart. I go right into “baby” voice mode when I am around pets and other animals, even on screen like Pinterest. My friends laugh at me as I gravitate towards someone’s dog on the street or talk to the cows as I drive by… I am a sucker. But with this love comes sensitivity. I get absolutely destroyed hearing about animal abuse or seeing shelter dogs. I freak out when I see a dog on the loose. Can’t tell you how many times my husband and I have stopped to help out a lost or dumped dog. I even stop the car and move turtles out of the road. I could go on and on. I bleed (and brake) for animals.

VINTAGE. This all started in college just by perusing the antique stores in Grapevine, TX. I started collecting some odd pieces for the apartment, mixing it into the decor, and it became an instant hit with friends. In 2007, I decided to open my own Etsy shop to sell my handmade and vintage wares. And over the past couple of years, I started to “rescue” vintage by thrifting and going to estate sales for inventory. I love vintage Pyrex and other glass bakeware, children’s books, barware, furniture, kitschy ceramic planters… But all of this shows because I sell what I love.

Hope that helps a little more, getting to know who is behind the “Hand on Hip” blog and Rare Bird Boutique Etsy/Instagram shops.

My Vintage Market

“So how’d it go?”

Last weekend, I had my “At Home Vintage Market” on Saturday. As you may remember, I was going to have a couple of vintage sellers join me and have like a mini trunk show in my house. But, over time, it evolved into an indoor/outdoor market by having a vendor outside as well. I also decided to post it on Craigslist, Austin Craft Riot, and the websites. We ended up having a nice gathering of friends/folks, shopping & mingling over a nice brunch spread.

Some of the public came out and not sure where they were, but maybe it definitely had to do with the heat and my location. I live out in the country and for some reason, I heard from a few people that a specific map app was directing people to the next town up. But, we did get a visit from the folks from the Huntsville Antique Show! They saw my ad on the Texas Antique Mall website and brought us some cool paper fans with their show info on them. Thank you so much!

Autumn of “Take Flyte Farm” had a lovely setup outside and Kristin of “After While Crocodile” & Julia of “Unique Antique” joined me inside. You can check out our Etsy websites here:

Rare Bird Boutique

I want to thank the lovely ladies that vended with me and everyone, including our friends, that came out to support us. It was a lot of fun! In regards to another vintage market, maybe I will try again this Fall or next Spring.

I did get to meet, through Autumn, Miss Stefanie and her daughter Liberty of Little Liberty’s in downtown Taylor, Texas, at my show. I am HaPpY to say that my shop, Rare Bird Boutique will have some of my vintage in her store starting this Friday! I also talked to Miss Curie of Cherry Tree Creative in Taylor as well and I will have my vintage in her store starting next week! Each store has so much to offer, so please check out their Facebook pages and visit them in person.

Several items from my Etsy shop will be pulled to go in these brick & mortar stores and I will probably close my online shop for a bit to reorganize shipping costs and add new inventory. So my apologies for this inconvenience!

Well, that’s that… One thing leads to another. I love what I do! Searching for that special-fun-retro vintage piece is what keeps me going. So stay tuned for more Rare Bird Boutique news via the blog, FB, or my newsletter.

Vintage DIY Pretties For Mama

Here is a quick list of DIY Mother’s Day gift ideas with several of the vintage items I will be selling at the Austin Flea this Saturday:

Images from 1. The Beehive Cottage 2. Houzz 3. The Kitschy Kitchen 4. California Pixie

1. I will have a few vintage hankies up for grabs! One thing you could do is stamp “Mom” or “Mother” on it with fabric paint/ink. Here is a great tutorial to help you get started. Also, if you have mad sewing skills, why don’t you take it to the next level and embroider your handkerchief.

2. I have several milk glass vases that would look lovely with your mama’s favorite bouquet. She’ll not only receive the thoughtful flowers, but also a keepsake vase.

3. Bake your mother a sweet treat and present it on one of the many dishes on display. I will have a vintage cake pedestal, cake carrier, plates, platters… If you need inspiration, here are some vintage cake recipes to try out. Furthermore, you could give your dear mama a vintage cakes cookbook to go with her classic serving piece.

4. Sweet little vintage planters are waiting for you to make them whole again. Run on over to the local hardware store or nursery and fill up your decorative container with succulents. Here are some tips on how to plant and care for them.

There will be more pretties for your mama and just about everything else for everyone’s taste, so come on out and shop vintage with Rare Bird Boutique. There will be tons of other local vendors selling handmade and vintage too! Check here for tomorrow’s show info.

Happy Dance

Yep, that’s me… dancing a jig in my head. I am excited to say that this week I have reached over 500 Likes on my Facebook Fan Page. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family, friends, and Rare Bird fans. With the mental celebration, I thought I should share the love by giving you all a reward. Everyone likes discounts and coupons, right? How about this:

It’s just a little something for my current (and hopefully future) customers of my Etsy shop, Rare Bird Boutique. This coupon lasts until Sunday, April 8th, 10 pm CST. You’ve got some time to peruse the store and see if there’s something your heart desires.

Also, I am hoping to add these fantastic vintage arts & crafts books I scored, from the 1950s-60s, this week. They have tons of colorful instructional pages on the best kitschy crafts I have ever seen. So keep a look out for new listings!

Have a great day and thank you all again,

My Wedding Day: Ode To Etsy

Sorry blog followers, I have been away for far too long! I got married September 1st and then had my wedding reception in Dallas on the 18th. Now that things have slowed down a bit, I wanted to share with you some of the details of my wedding day.

Since Jon and I have our own unique style, we decided to get married (by ourselves) in Kauai on Shipwreck Beach. To kick things off, I turned to Etsy to create my vintage inspired wedding day outfit.

I found a summery romantic dress, perfect for a beach wedding, at French Sugar Couture.

Getting married by the windy ocean, an up-do was a must! So, I picked out a vintage looking hair comb from Mia Beads.

I also bought a vintage glamour bracelet from Stellar Light Designs, down under in Australia:

My outfit was light an airy, simple and vintage. I couldn’t have asked for a better look that showed off my style. Thanks to Etsy, I found everything I wanted. Support and shop handmade! You’ll surely find something one-of-a-kind.

Stay tuned, I will post soon about my wedding reception as well!  It will include all the Etsy shops I used to complete my outfit and the decorations I created for our special gathering with friends & family.

Vintage Is OK In My Book – Giveaway!

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

First giveaway down, second giveaway is a go!

Hailing from Edmond, Oklahoma, I bring you Vintage Whale; two very ambitious young ladies with a knack for vintage and anything else that might just be too cool for you and me. They are Lily and Kristine, two college students who have four, yes four blogs between them, an Etsy shop, and now a Facebook fan page. Lucky for you, they will be giving away a lovely bobby pin set.

(Find out about your chance to win at the end of this post.)

Rosette Bobby Pins

I did a lil’ Q&A with the girls last week and here is what they have to say.

MELANIE: Welcome Lily & Kristine! I feel like I am interviewing a rock band… Err… uh, so when did you get started making jewelry, cards and collecting vintage dresses?

VINTAGE WHALE: We’ve been thrifting for ourselves for years now, but only recently have decided to share our finds in our Etsy shop. We started making jewelry, accessories, and cards approximately one week before Vintage Whale opened, so about a month ago! However, though we are new to the crafting world, we couldn’t be more enthusiastic or excited about our new ideas, pieces, and our shop’s reception by the lovely people of Etsy.

Teal My Heart Vintage Dress

MELANIE: How would you describe yourselves?

VINTAGE WHALE: We are two college students who wanted to share their vintage finds and handmade goods with everyone on Etsy. Lily loves the color purple and has recently become an avid beader. She also loves scouring estate sales and flea markets for unique and fun finds. Kristine is inspired by anything floral and loves making things out of buttons. She loves going on thrifting adventures in her spare time. We have frequent crafting/movie nights to make adorable necklaces, accessories, and paper goods for our shop, and also to work on photographing our items!

Something Blue Rosette Necklace

MELANIE: Not wanting to skip a beat, is there anything else we we should know specifically about the shop?

VINTAGE WHALE: We never list anything in our shop that we do not adore ourselves. So, we hope that people visiting Vintage Whale will find something that they love as much as we loved finding or making it!

Thanks again to Lily and Kristine, the dynamic duo that runs Vintage Whale! To really get to know the girls, check out their aforementioned blogs and FB page:
