That Happened Fast!

It sure did. We decided to buy a house and build. Our plans went from 3-5 years (in the making for a couple) to NOW.

After looking around town for neighborhoods that suited our tastes (vintage ranch style homes with big yards) became hard to find in our price range, we changed gears. We thought about houses to remodel or that were already remodeled in our style. Then there was the day my husband said something about new homes. The funny thing was, we have never cared for new homes ever! Somehow though, the thought of starting new and not having to fix up anything, was a joyful relief.

Once we looked around, it was over. It was done in my head as to what I wanted. Hubby and I struggled a bit with agreeing on what to do, but in the end, we found our home. A brand spankin’ new house, built in 6-7 months time.

The crazy part now is finding the time and energy in between life’s events and work, to pack/declutter, fix up our current home,  and keeping it spotless for the realtor team. Let’s also throw in the costly task of replacing our AC system this week, before our house goes on the market. Nice timing.

Part of the craziness ensuing is me purging Rare Bird inventory. I do not want to pack it up and I don’t want it stored either until the new house is ready. So in the mean time, I have asked my customers to name a price and make an offer. This means deep discounts! I have had folks set up appointments to meet me at my home office or to check out my Instagram shop. By the way, free shipping ends in the Etsy shop Monday, 7/14. I have already sold a lot of stuff, but there’s still more! Pretty soon, Rare Bird will take a hiatus, so get your vintage while you can!

To wrap this up with a bow, I am taking a breather to write this and update you on what’s going on… We will be working on packing and fixing up a few more items around the house this weekend. I will try my best to post more and keep you abreast of anything else.

Best wishes,

Decorating the House Update #2

It has been a while and I have not mentioned that I did buy a Pine Cone Hill bedskirt after I was eyeballing their website in January. In March, I bought a “Keep Calm and Carry On” poster. Since then, I have framed it and added it to our bedroom. I wanted to update you guys on how that came together:

Also, for my birthday in February, Jon and I bought a bookcase from Crate & Barrel and in March, he found a groovy older table at Goodwill and spruced it up. So I wanted to show you how this too came together in the living room:

I have other things in mind for the house, but for now we are focusing on finishing up the flooring trim and once it stops raining, painting the outside of the house. We have dug out the landscaping to 1) make it easier to paint the front of the house and 2) we are thinking about building a front porch deck. Since my house is naked, I have recycled some of the plants that were in the front and put them in pots and flower beds around the house. I have also added some new plants and I am waiting for my flowers to grow and bloom, thanks to a bag of wildflower seeds my dear friend Cheri sent me. I also bought some hanging baskets for the back porch and put ferns in them. I love them! Another decoration for my back porch – a barn swallow’s nest in the corner equipped with a set of expectant birds. They have returned this year to have their babies.

Yep, things are slowly progressing around here, but we are also enjoying the beautiful flowers, green grass, birds, and nice weather. Next week, we go on vacation to Hawaii. Ahhhh, I can’t wait! Once we get back, it is back to business. Gotta keep working on our projects! Until then…

Decorating the House Update #1

Last weekend, we bought our dining room table & chairs. I ended up buying some SARALISA fabric from IKEA on Monday; just realized that it is brand new! Not what I had decided to get before hand, but Jon and I love it! So during the rest of the week, we reupholstered the seat cushions & Scotch Gard’ed them too.

Then yesterday, I sold some of my living room furniture to a co-worker. That left us without a side table, coffee table, & book shelf.  Jon really wanted us to get a coffee table pronto, so we drove around all day searching for the perfect table that we would both agree on. We drove to places like World Market, Pier 1, etc., but then we went to some funky vintage stores around South Austin and found nothing…

We even took a break and had a beer at a place called Black Dog Pub. There was nothing pub-like about this place. There was R&B music on the jukebox, sports paraphernalia on the walls, flat screen tv’s with basketball on, gangsta-esque waitresses… Since we felt a little out of place, we took off – I didn’t even finish my beer. Once in the car, we renamed it Snoop Dog Pub. Overall, it was nice to take a break and have a laugh before we got started again.

After all of that, we decided to go to IKEA. Why didn’t we try there?  It is right by our house! We thought surely they have to have something that won’t fall apart!  And they did, to our surprise.  (Which we decided that IKEA has really cheap stuff and on the other hand, they have really nice stuff – for everyone’s price range). We found a gorgeous solid, black, square coffee table: the IKEA STOCKHOLM and it is brand spankin’ new too.

Today, I am venturing out to buy some rugs from World Market for the living room thanks to my brother and the gift card he got us for Christmas, maybe some new throw pillows too!  Jon is finishing up the floors, so I need to get out of the house.

As for a new book shelf, we are not really too concerned about it right now.  We need a new media center/console.  The one we have is from Best Buy, circa 2001, and it is made of particle board. I think I just threw up in my mouth, did you? ha! Also, in regards to the side table, I might not lean so much towards the west elm table I was drooling over in a previous blog.  I might actually want this one from Target:

My birthday is around the corner and I have already mentioned to Jon that if he wants to get me anything, it could be a side table.  Hehe.
