Who’s That Lady?

After just scheduling some strategic tweets about my current giveaway, I realized I need to schedule some blog posts too. Can’t be blogging a couple of times a week, when I have time… BORING! But, while I have you and your attention, I think I am going to introduce myself, aka blogger/seller/human.

See that profile pic off to the side? Yep, that’s me, Melanie. You know I love design/art/decorating/animals/vintage, just as it says. To be more precise, I will go into detail:

ART. Art has been a big part of my life. I took it throughout middle school and was in AP Art in high school. Continuing on into college, I graduated with my BFA in Art from the University of Texas at Arlington. I enjoy painting and collage as creative outlets, but really can’t seem to get invested in doing them anymore. I took a painting class at the AMOA Laguna Gloria last Spring and fell right back in love. It’s still there… when I find inspiration and time.

DESIGN. My last year in college though, I decided to focus on graphic design. I dabble in a little bit of it now with my job creating the company weekly sales newsletters, but I’m no logo/branding creating genius. I just admire all of that from afar like packaging/illustration/typography.

DECORATING. Geez, obsessed much? Just look at my Pinterest board. My style in a nutshell: Modern Eclectic (modern mixed with antiques/vintage). Decorating has been in my blood since I was a kid though. My room was always pristine and decorated. I collected Barbie’s, but I also asked for and bought decor & furniture for my room. Embarrassingly enough, in high school, I even had a sign on my bed to not sit on it. Everything was in it’s perfectly staged place. Who I was trying to impress, I don’t know, but it sure makes me laugh today. Creating your happy place is serious business, folks!

ANIMALS. Where do I begin? This is my weakness; they are my heart. I go right into “baby” voice mode when I am around pets and other animals, even on screen like Pinterest. My friends laugh at me as I gravitate towards someone’s dog on the street or talk to the cows as I drive by… I am a sucker. But with this love comes sensitivity. I get absolutely destroyed hearing about animal abuse or seeing shelter dogs. I freak out when I see a dog on the loose. Can’t tell you how many times my husband and I have stopped to help out a lost or dumped dog. I even stop the car and move turtles out of the road. I could go on and on. I bleed (and brake) for animals.

VINTAGE. This all started in college just by perusing the antique stores in Grapevine, TX. I started collecting some odd pieces for the apartment, mixing it into the decor, and it became an instant hit with friends. In 2007, I decided to open my own Etsy shop to sell my handmade and vintage wares. And over the past couple of years, I started to “rescue” vintage by thrifting and going to estate sales for inventory. I love vintage Pyrex and other glass bakeware, children’s books, barware, furniture, kitschy ceramic planters… But all of this shows because I sell what I love.

Hope that helps a little more, getting to know who is behind the “Hand on Hip” blog and Rare Bird Boutique Etsy/Instagram shops.

The New Pinboard

I am so excited to announce another fun website for you to play on! A long time ago, I posted about Sproost, a website to assist you in discovering your personal decorating style. Now I have found a website called Pinterest, “a free service to share collections of things you love — whether that’s food, art, clothing, or books.”

You create visual lists (like a real pinboard) of the things you love, but online! After requesting an invitation, you can log on with your email and a password or through your Facebook account. You can also curate, search boards, check out people that are already signed up and what they are interested in, and so much more!

Here is just one of the many boards made by a member on Pinterest:

“Fashion and Flair”

Join today and design your own boards. I can’t wait to get started…

Decorating the House Update #2

It has been a while and I have not mentioned that I did buy a Pine Cone Hill bedskirt after I was eyeballing their website in January. In March, I bought a “Keep Calm and Carry On” poster. Since then, I have framed it and added it to our bedroom. I wanted to update you guys on how that came together:

Also, for my birthday in February, Jon and I bought a bookcase from Crate & Barrel and in March, he found a groovy older table at Goodwill and spruced it up. So I wanted to show you how this too came together in the living room:

I have other things in mind for the house, but for now we are focusing on finishing up the flooring trim and once it stops raining, painting the outside of the house. We have dug out the landscaping to 1) make it easier to paint the front of the house and 2) we are thinking about building a front porch deck. Since my house is naked, I have recycled some of the plants that were in the front and put them in pots and flower beds around the house. I have also added some new plants and I am waiting for my flowers to grow and bloom, thanks to a bag of wildflower seeds my dear friend Cheri sent me. I also bought some hanging baskets for the back porch and put ferns in them. I love them! Another decoration for my back porch – a barn swallow’s nest in the corner equipped with a set of expectant birds. They have returned this year to have their babies.

Yep, things are slowly progressing around here, but we are also enjoying the beautiful flowers, green grass, birds, and nice weather. Next week, we go on vacation to Hawaii. Ahhhh, I can’t wait! Once we get back, it is back to business. Gotta keep working on our projects! Until then…

Limited Edition Alphabet Poster

I just wanted to share a great website: Bless Design. Check out their “A to Z” poster that is yolk/grey. It is so graphic and fun!

Paper size: 765mm x 570mm.

I just love the icons that match each letter, especially the letter C. Tee Hee!

Let’s Catch Up!

In February, Hand On Hip got some love on the Internet!  Thanks to Ink Obsession Designs and All Things Austin Design for blogging about my lil’ ol’ blog. It really means so much to me and I hope one day, that I will have a lot more to talk about for you all! Come one and come all – I love comments and free love (press)!

I would also like to brag about the table Jon found and bought at Goodwill or as one of my coworkers calls it, GW Boutique! Last weekend, Jon decided to peruse a local Goodwill for a sidetable.  Low and behold, he found a table in need of some TLC.  The legs were gold and the wood was an orange-tan color; this table screamed the 70’s!  He picked it up for a cool $13 bucks and loaded it up in the Jeep, homebound!

Jon turned the look of the table around by stripping the finish, sanding and staining it  an Ebony color, and sealing it with clear lacquer.  Then he painted the legs of the table black and WAH-LAH!  A brand new cool retro side table!

Looks great honey!

What have you found at a thrift store/garage sale and restored or refinished?  Maybe this blog will inspire you to find a diamond in the rough and do a little fixing up… tell me all about it!

By the way – After I saw this red metal “EAT” sign on one of my favorite design blogs, I decided to find it and buy it online at Sundance Catalog. It is now proudly displayed above the back door in the kitchen. I just love it!

Sanctuary, It Is…

Fun Find Alert:

Today on my lunch break, I decided that I was going to find a store other than Target, etc., that had stuff that fit my decorating style. I hopped on the Internet and found Sanctuary in Westlake Hills (just a few miles away from work). As soon as I saw this picture, I had my keys in hand, ready to go!

When I got there, I was so relieved to see items in the store that I search for on design websites like the garden gloves from Hable Construction I wanted, but in pink!  I picked up some fun coasters from Snow & Graham and a lovely piece of garden art (home decor) by a local artist; check out her gallery & shop at LD Design.

When I was in the process of checking out, I spoke to a lovely lady at the counter. I told her how I wanted to blog about Sanctuary and she asked me what my blog was about. I explained to her that I just blogged about decorating my house and design-y type stuff. She seemed excited about me blogging about the store and she mentioned that her house was featured on Apartment Therapy and asked if I had seen it.

I didn’t recall, but was anxious to check it out. Now that I think of it all, I was speaking to Hanna the owner of the store and I had seen the blog about her “sunny” home, but I saw it on All Things Austin Design. Very cool & exciting!!

I enjoyed speaking with Hanna and now that I have visited the store, I am a BIG fan! Please stop by this gem of a store at: Sanctuary / 3663 Bee Caves Road / Westlake Hills, Tx. / 78746 / 512.329.0507 / Sanctuary Blog

Barn Owl Collectibles

Fun Find Alert:

This weekend, we spent our Valentine’s Day in a quaint, bustling little town outside of San Antonio, Texas, called Boerne. It has boutiques, bakeries, art galleries, and antique stores galore! One store I stumbled upon that I absolutely fell in love with was Barn Owl Collectibles.

When you walk in, the store is set up in a way that is minimal, airy, simple & sophisticated. Not stuffy and crowded like some antique stores. Barn Owl has everything from furniture, art, home decor, gifts… take a look!

Just gorgeous!

This armoire was only $400 and in spectacular condition.

I loved this French painting!

I met the owner and found out that they have only been open for 3 months. I wish them the best and lots of success!  If you are ever in the Hill Country and up to visiting a charming little city with great shopping, go to Boerne and stop in Barn Owl.  They are located at 233 S. Main, Suite B / Boerne, Texas / 78006 / 210-725-4720

Use Those Corners!

Another brilliant idea – something different to do with your framed photos & art!  Just take a corner of a room in your house and create a small gallery with mix & match frames.

It sure gives you something to think about…  I can’t wait to get started!  I am thinking of a certain corner in the living room & one in the bedroom. As seen on Decorology.

What’s Your Personal Decorating Style?

Go to Sproost to find out your personal decorating style and then figure out what furniture & accessories to buy according to the quiz results!  It is really simple and fast…  All you have to do is go through some pictures of rooms and click on whether you Hate it, Like it, Love it, etc.  Then *poof!*,  the website will let you know what your decorating style is based on what you like the most.

I found out about the quiz thanks to the This Young House blog I love to read so much! Sproost determined my style(s), spot on! Here are my results:

Vintage Modern & French Eclectic are perfect  for me – Wow!  This will help me get ideas to redecorate the house.  It’s your turn, take the quiz… what’s your style?

*This also explains what I have already done with the house 🙂

Be My Valentine

As I am laid up in bed sick, I look forward to Valentine’s Day this weekend.  With love in the air, or germs in my case, I wanted to peruse the Internet to see what V-day lovelies are out there…
